Our Rutherford County  has four distinct seasons and has been recognized as one of the best places in the country to retire to because of its unique climate referred to as the Isothermal Belt (“Iso” meaning constant and “thermal” meaning temperature).  Simply put, we are in an area of constantly mild temperatures.  Rutherford County does not get as hot in the summer or as cold in the winter as the other counties in the surrounding area.  The spring season offers mild days and cool nights.  The native dogwoods (the state tree) and wild rhododendrons with their vibrant blooms are a site to behold.  The fall is typical Western North Carolina – ideal weather and gorgeous fall colors, which usually last through Thanksgiving.

An Outdoorsman’s Paradise!   Just 25 miles north, tucked away in the rolling hills at the base of Linville Gorge, you’ll find Lake James, a 6812 acre lake with more than 150 miles of shoreline.  This impressive waterway is the brilliant centerpiece of Lake James State Park.  In beautiful Hickory Nut Gorge you will find Lake Lure and the Chimney Rock State Park. Here nature offers scenic vistas of the Appalachian Mountains and beckons to those with an appetite for recreation.  Bring family and friends to one of North Carolina’s newest state parks for a variety of activities.  Enjoy swimming and sunbathing, or enjoy an afternoon picnic along the lakeshore.  Boat, water ski, or fish in the cool mountain waters.  Take a walk and enjoy an abundance of wildflowers and wildlife along park trails.

Also, just 10 miles east of South Mountain Peaks, you’ll find the 30,000 acre South Mountain State Park which offers equestrian camping, excellent trout fishing, public camping, and miles of mountain biking, hiking, and horseback riding trails.  With all it has to offer, the South Mountain State Park is sure to be a hit with people of all ages!
